I much admire Douglas Carswell’s work. His book Progress vs Parasites is well researched, well written and very persuasive. He’s right that politics is downstream of culture, and ours is unwell. But the radical solutions he proposes will happen only when the public are confronted with either a compelling opportunity or an actual crisis, like war or economic collapse. In the absence of such provocations, and for as long as we continue to paper over our problems with funny money, inertia will prevail.
