Wow! Thanks, Winston. This is one of the best film reviews I've read in a long time. I was planning to see this movie, anyway, simply because it's THE ODYSSEY, but now I look forward to seeing it even more. Can't wait!
Love this, Winston. I’ve read a couple wonderful essays concerning this version and ignored many others. I am delighted that Nolan has opened eyes, ears and minds to exploring this extraordinary work, language, art, and history. I pray it’s contagious.
Well, I’VE been saying that the casting of Matt Damon doesn’t make sense either and I’ve seen a few YouTube comments saying the same. It’s just that we’re not famous, so you’ve not heard from us. But there are some people who have noticed that much of the casting is ridiculous all along. I find these casting choices to be immersion breaking. More importantly it’s disgraceful, from a social perspective. It’s as if they’re saying that it would be BETTER if Helen is black. It’s not better or worse, but the suggestion makes me and many others angry. Back to it being immersion breaking; if I see non white characters in a King Arthur, or any other European fable/legend based movie, it will break the immersion and I will like the movie much less. If at all. Why in Gods green Earth would we need white people in a Mulan movie, either? I have no doubt that Nolan’s exceptional filmmaking standards are on full display and that he subverted some progressive ideas in this film. I’m still not going to reward these people with my money.

Fair
Yes, most thoughtful Winston.
