Celebrated historian Niall Ferguson, author of 17 books including Civilisation, a biography of Kissinger, a biography of the Rothschild family and Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe, discusses A.I. with me. He recently wrote that the A.I. doomsdayists, including those behind the petition for a six month moratorium on A.I. development, should not be ignored. But some of them think humanity’s end is around the corner. Niall and I discuss whether or not they are correct.
Niall explains how A.G.I. and L.L.M.s might change geo-politics, warfare, democratic politics, industry and blue and white collar jobs. He cites sci-fi literature and explorers where the existential catastrophisers, like philosopher Eliezer Yudkowsky, might have a point.
It was an honour to speak with Niall, someone I’ve been reading for years. A.I. may be here but it is not yet at Niall-level intelligence, fortunately. Thanks Niall

I really appreciated hearing an intelligent middle ground conversation about the threat and limitations of non-human intelligence. Thank you, Winston--you chose good questions!
