Rappers Aren't Killing Jews

Kanye West might be surprised to learn that Keir Starmer insists “free speech is one of the founding values of the United Kingdom.” That’s what the British Prime Minister told President Trump last year, anyway. “And we protect it jealously and fiercely and always will.”

Kanye, the 24-Grammy-winning self-styled Hip-Hop Picasso, will no longer be performing at London’s Wireless festival. He has been banned from entering the UK by Downing Street in the name of a “fight to confront and defeat the poison of antisemitism.” Whilst Kanye now has quite a long history of toying with Nazism, last time I checked, the recent surge in violent antisemitism in the UK is not coming from the American-rapper community.

There may be alternative routes for Kanye to come to Britain

If antisemitism was the issue, it is curious then that Starmer was “delighted” to welcome Egyptian-British political activist Alaa Abd El-Fattah to the UK on Boxing Day, despite him calling the killing of Zionists “heroic” and suggesting “we need to kill more of them.”

And of course, if Starmer actually wanted to deal with antisemitism in Britain, he might start by naming its source. Provocative as the American-rapper community might be, there is another community in Britain more likely to hold a positive view of Hamas than a negative one, one of which half believe Jews control the government — a community of whom one in a hundred are jew-hating Jihadis known to MI5.

If it wasn’t already clear, I might remind you that the murders at the synagogue in Manchester last October were committed by Jihad al-Shamie, a Syrian-Brit. Last month, four Hatzola ambulances were set on fire outside a synagogue in North London. The suspects: Hamza Iqbal, Rehan Khan, and a 17-year-old dual British-Pakistani national. “It is a must that we grab a Jewish person and slaughter him and remove his head,” wrote Walid Saadaoui, one of the two behind another foiled Manchester terrorist plot “to attack a ‘mass gathering of Jews.’”

But our Prime Minister daren’t call out this problem in the Muslim community because it is a vital voter bloc Labour is desperately losing. Worse still, of the 70,000 illegal migrants who’ve entered the country by small boats since the start of his premiership, at least 70% have come from Muslim-majority countries. How many of them are jihadis? If only 1% are jihadis, that makes 490.

Keir Starmer’s decision to ban Kanye is low-hanging political fruit. West no question has quite a history of outbursts against Jews, as well as of long apologies and retractions and mental illness. But the decision to cancel his travel authorisation will do little to improve the life of Jews in Britain. On the contrary, some are already using it as evidence that Jews control the British government.

But the affair doesn’t just expose the inconsistencies of our feckless Premier. Only last year Paul Weller, Massive Attack, Primal Scream and a school of other artists published an open letter in defence of Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap’s right to support Hezbollah and Hamas — two organisations embodying the spirit of Hitler in the present day (as Hezbollah militants in Lebanon told me themselves). “The question of agreeing with Kneecap’s political views is irrelevant,” the pop stars implored, “it is in the key interests of every artist that all creative expression be protected.” Surely these principled musicians are similarly outraged by the treatment of Kanye even if they disagree with the things he’s said? I eagerly anticipate their updated open letter.

In the meantime, you’ll forgive my impression that neither the Prime Minister nor these right-on musicians care about free speech or antisemitism. Whether it is in government or in the arts, double standards seem to be the only consistency. No wonder then that the world is increasingly of the impression that Britain has become a totalitarian Woke-Caliphate.

In the humid outskirts of Havana, I felt like I’d drifted into a sepia-tinted parallel timeline.

“A ‘Fidel’.”

My laughter wasn’t forthcoming. Not that it wasn’t funny. I was paralysed by the surrealism. It was the last week of six decades of Castro rule and the final week of Raúl Castro’s presidency, yet here I was with his granddaughter Gabriella. And her boyfriend was selling me drugs.

Hadn’t her grandparents put people to death for selling drugs? Yes. Four high-ranking officials were executed by firing squad in 1989 for drug-smuggling. Despite this, her presence gave me an odd sense of safety. Some farm animals are more equal than others. And these, surely, were the most equal of all.

“And half a gram?”

He eyed me.

“…a ‘Raul’.”

A ‘Fidel’

“Brighton and Birmingham and Bradford and Blackburn and Cambridge and Glasgow…” No, London’s mayor Sadiq Khan was not listing off the locations of the Pakistani Rape Gangs across Britain.

Rather, like a field commander listing off his victories, these were the places where public Iftars were being celebrated across the country. “We think we’re going to break the record for the biggest Iftar, not just in Britain, not just in Europe but in the Western world.”

How curious to watch Sadiq Khan on his knees towards Mecca become a Rorschach Test for the nation. The Mayor of London’s open-air Ramadan prayers acted as an ink blot evoking radically different interpretations in the eye of the beholder.

On the one hand, Khan himself explicitly called Monday’s public displays of Islamic piety in Trafalgar Square opposition to “the forces of division and darkness”.

On the other hand, Conservative MP Nick Timothy called out those very same prayers as an “act of domination and therefore division”. In a viral X post he wrote “The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination…. the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook….”

Timothy’s remarks were themselves a Rorschach Test. He enjoyed support from the political right - not just Tory leader Kemi Badenoch but Reform UK MPs Sarah Pochin and Richard Tice and independent activist Tommy Robinson.

The political left took a different view.

“The comments from Nick Timothy are shameful! Kemi Badenoch should do the right thing and sack him” slammed Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “This is disgraceful… Your rhetoric is inflammatory, divisive, and beneath any serious public office.” Wrote independent MP Adnan Hussain, a sentiment shared by his fellow sectarian MPs elected on the Gaza-ticket in July 2024.

The snowballing Rorschach continued with Director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding Chris Doyle quick to point out that Trafalgar Square was in fact an Arabic name: Taraf al-Ghar. He was, I imagine, pretty happy to have found evidence of Britain’s centuries-long multiculturalism. Political commentator Emma Webb challenged Doyle, pointing out the Square is so named to commemorate Lord Nelson’s battle victory in a place conquered and viciously oppressed by Muslim overlords for eight centuries.

I note that of those protesting that Muslims are being unfairly treated by the likes of Timothy none came to the defence of Adam Smith-Connor, arrested for silent prayer in 2022. Charged for praying for his unborn son and ordered to pay £9,000 in prosecution costs. President Trump would later send a delegation to investigate the suppression of Christian speech in Britain. More recently still, local Muslims attempted to get a Christian preacher arrested in Whitechapel, London. In the same neighbourhood a UKIP “Walk With Jesus” demonstration was forbidden. The British left appear to have a two-tier memory.

Unfortunately these Rorschach Tests of opposing world views in Britain run deeper. A Policy Exchange survey this month highlights broader geopolitical divides between British Muslims and non-Muslims.

“When looking at net favourability ratings towards Iran, the British Muslim figure is +22 - despite the regime’s heavily militarised crackdown on the recent nationwide demonstrations which resulted in unprecedented massacres. For the general population, it plummets to -42 (a difference of 64 points).”

This might shock, but it shouldn’t surprise. A 2024 Henry Jackson Society poll commissioned shortly after October 7th, 2023 found British Muslims were more likely to have a positive than negative view of Hamas overall. Only 24% of British Muslims had a negative view of Hamas.

But we didn’t need polling to understand this. Years of relentless pro-Hamas protests through London have exhausted the non-muslim population, pushing their tolerance to its limits.

Nick Timothy was right to call out the imposing Iftar prayers. And whilst I might examine the historical and theological reasons for him being right, there is a simple reason why Muslim public prayer is facing such a negative reaction in comparison with other faiths.
